Coronavirus Vaccine - 2021

A coronavirus vaccine will not be possible till at least next year, government officials told the parliamentary standing committee on science and technology, amid a global race by scientists and researchers to tackle the pandemic.

Six companies are working on a COVID-19 vaccine. Along with two Indian vaccines, COVAXIN and ZyCOV-D, world over 11 out of 140 vaccine candidates are in human trials.

Both have been approved for phase II, III trials. The first two phase of drug trials test for safety while the third tests the medicines efficacy. Each phase can take months, or even years, to be completed.

Phase I trials for COVAXIN, which developed in association with Indian Council of Medical Research, are scheduled to be completed in 28 days-which would put the vaccine candidate on track for an August 15 release.

Senior officials of the department of biotechnology, department of scientific and industrial research, council of scientific and industrial research and principal scientific advisor to the government, K Vijay Raghavan, were participated in a meeting at parliament.

India a leading manufacturer of vaccines and generic medicines is expected to play a key role in this race. “Nearly 60% of the world’s vaccines are developed in India so we have hope that either India would be in the lead of finding or manufacturing the vaccine,” a senior government official said.

The first human clinical trials for vaccine candidates being developed in India are set to begin Monday but the Ministry of Science and Technology said that last week that although 11 of 140 coronavirus candidates in the world were in human trials,"none of these are likely to be ready for mass use before 2021”.

We hope for the best.
